Post Production

Students are now hard at work putting their films together.  There are many decisions to make in terms of music, sound effects, narrative etc. Some of the high school students have come in to help out with recording original music.

One student is even doing an animation.  This means drawing, drawing, drawing - scanning, scanning, scanning!

Edit, Edit, Edit!!!  Cut.... Paste... Trim...

Some of the students are creating the music for their films on the computers.

Out in the REAL world...

Excursion time.... what fun to be had and so much to learn about filmmaking!

Many thanks to local filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson who met us at the Victorian College of Arts Film & TV department for a chat. A filmmaker with numerous awards and a world of experience under his belt, Amiel was a great inspiration to the whole class. Students were delighted to find out that his first film was made when he was about the same age as them. He showed us some of his films and gave some very honest answers to some very challenging questions asked by the students. We all learnt a lot from him. Amiel's film, Barstardy, is being released around Australia in June 2009. (http://www.bastardydocumentary.com/)

We went along to Little Big Shorts, a film festival especially for kids. The students enjoyed a program of short films from The Netherlands, Bangladesh, USA and Australia. We were lucky to have one of the filmmakers, Tali Ga-lon in the crowd. Students had an opportunity to ask her about her animation Lucille.

Lunch in Fed Square...

Some students took the opportunity to get some shots for their films.

Pre-Production: Planning, Planning, Planning!

After learning and practising all of the filmmaking skills necessary to make a short documentary, the class set about planning their own films.  This included researching, preparing interview questions and storyboarding.

Today we expanded our interviewing skills and stepped outside in our documentary film crews - Director/Interviewer, Camera Operator and Interviewee.  Everyone did extremely well working in teams to film their interviews.

Exploring Culture & Identity

Everyone in the class put markers on the world map to show the countries that they have a connection to - there were more than 15 countries represented!

We all learnt a lot about the different cultures represented in the class.

Our first class...

In this lesson we covered storytelling; culture and identity through film; and students did some brainstorming to come up with ideas for their own films.
